Description

Stephen Halder’s world was shattered. The only family he has known in five hundred years of undeath is no more, torn apart by a traitor from within. The closest allies he has now are the reformed pirate captain Lomax, and his brilliant apprentice Shaun. People he has known for less than a week.

Their only refuge is the sentient spaceship Mina, Stephen’s longtime companion and equal partner in his adventures. Together they have been sent hurtling across space, jumping into faster than light travel with no destination set to escape the claws of the grand conspiracy hunting Stephen.
But they find that the conspiracy is larger than Stephen thought, growing beyond his family. They have infiltrated all of human space, and have influences he could never foresee. That leaves only one place Stephen where Stephen could find refuge. The magic university he helped found, on the wrong side of a black hole’s event horizon.

Will that barrier be enough, or will the arcane and technological means of Brighter Dawn be too much? Is the one place left that Stephen believes safe exactly where they want him to go?
